Welcome to /diy/, a place to:

Post and discuss /diy/ projects, ask questions regarding /diy/ topics and exchange ideas and techniques.

Please keep in mind:
- This is a SFW board. No fleshlights or other sex toys.
- No weapons. That goes to /k/ - Weapons. The workmanship and techniques involved in creating objects which could be used as weapons or the portion of a weapons project that involves them (e.g., forging steel for a blade, machining for gunsmithing, what epoxy can I use to fix my bow) may be discussed in /diy/, but discussing weapon-specific techniques/designs or the actual use of weapons is disallowed. Things such as fixed blade knives or axes are considered tools, things such as swords, guns or explosives are considered weapons.
- No drugs or drug paraphernalia (See Global Rule 1). If you want to discuss something that could involve such things (e.g., carving a tobacco pipe from wood) that's fine, but make sure it's /diy/ related and doesn't involve drugs or it will result in deletion/ban.

So I have this lock, and it works great, but aparently some internals arent rust-resistant, so I keep it oiled at all times. Still, it's -12C now, and in order to open it, I have to heat it up with torch first. Aparently some humidity is still in there, & some rust, it wont work in the cold. Freezes. Question is - if I "bathe it" in coca-cola (to get rid of rust), than dry it, and bathe in oil - would that help?

CPU Architectures thread?
Post and discuss various architectures that have been designed over the decades and what their advantages or disadvantages were.

I'm thinking about making my own toy architecture and a 74xx series logic implementation of it.
So far I'm thinking of having 2 accumulators, 8 general purpose registers, and an instruction count register.
Other features would be a hardware timer/counter, an external interrupt pin, and some memory mapped I/O.
I haven't nailed out the instruction set quite yet, but I'd like to keep it fairly simple, probably no more than 40 instructions.
Additionally, I'm planning on giving it a front panel similar to pic related from the IBM 1401.

I live in sunny [extremely high wind speed area] southern California and need to tear off and replace my roof. What do I NEED and what is recommended? I knows some roofers use felt, and others use adhesive backed synthetics. I have no idea what is worth spending the extra money on and what is sake oil.

I have a late 1950's ranch home / rambler with the low hip joint roof. I am not sure what the pitch is yet, as I have yet to measure it. I have a few leaks and will have to have some of the plywood replaced. Hopefully the rafters are fine.

Also, should I have the insulation replaced while the roof is torn off? The attic is too small to work in otherwise. If I had unlimited funds I would consider a rewire and repipe, but I am not made of cash.

Any advice appreciated. I'm the kind of person that with think, rethink, and over analyze situations before starting a project. It is both a blessing and a curse.

I know I wont be able to achieve the same durability as an original figurine but I want to at least make it look good. Previous owner glued it with hot glue and it looked terrible, i removed most of it.

I'm pretty damn impressed. Took about 4 hours to make from start to finish. Does anyone know what kind of rock it is? At first, I thought it might be chert, but this looks too opaque for that. It actually looks very similar to tan jasper. Does anybody know?

Help, poorfag with a serious leak problem. The uppermost, ceramic-tiled floor which houses an open garden is leaking water to the floor below causing a lot of damage.

I don't really care about appearances, how do I stop the leak? I think the water simply seeps through the gaps between the tiles and somehow permeated through whatever the floor is made out of.

Can I solve this problem using liquid rubber? If possible I don't want to deal with dismantling the ceramics.

Yesterday, one of my small heaters stopped working and when I tried to open it, I found 3 of these damn screws holding the controller together. Since I didn't have a T9 security torx bit, I was looking at ways to open it without having to order and wait for bits.
First, I thought about drilling those posts out but these screws are fucking small and I bet I'd destroy the screws and strip the star pattern too. I ended up using a philips screwdriver and I applied the pressure on the middle post and managed to squish and bend it. That allowed me to use a regular torx T9 bit and unscrew it. It works because all you need is 0.5mm of depth for the bit to engage the star pattern and by bending the post, its height is reduced.

Anyway, I have no idea if this would work on larger screws since the middle post in those is probably stiffer/wider.

How do you guys deal with this shit if you don't have a bit?

I know this is DIY but for time and headaches sake I would like to buy a desktop CNC machine. Light to moderate duty hobby tier is fine.

Been looking at the Semp DTM 280 for several reasons. Ready to run right out of the box. Carves about any material I will ever need it for. And is user friendly (complete CNC noob.)

Mostly going to be cutting aluminum for custom fishing sinker and lure molds.

Considering running it as much as I can since I can babysit it during work hours and essentially have a part time job while I work. The thing is $3,000 but if you consider the custom molds I buy are $700 then 4 or 5 successful aluminum molds just paid for the machine.

Any advice for a CNC noob ready to dive into the hobby or Ideas to make sales with it?

Links below are company website and a demo of it in action. The product company's site also has samples made with it in the material compatabilies section on the bottom of the page.

hey wassup /diy/,
I'd highly appreciate an advice on a revolving chimney.
I have to buy a new revolving chimney for my house and while the price of a new one is around 50-70€, I stumbled upon a local offer for a revolving chimney at 25€.
So, I have no idea what I should check, the price seems pretty low and the offer states it's never been used, I feel a little suspicious.
It says it's made of galvanized steel, and I read somewhere that it's not ideal.. but I'm not looking for the heaven of chimneys, I just want something that does it's job. Should I be concerned about that material? Any suggestions on what I should check when I'm gonna see it?

Hey /Doy/, I’m starting to work with leather and I’d like to ask you what you think I can make or do to get good at it, like if making small pouches is good practice or making leather coasters for example.
A little short on cash but I got some 8 ounce leather (about 12” by 18” left I think), although if I need to buy some more pieces i can bite the prices.

Any Machinists around? Full-time, hobby, or otherwise?

I'm looking to get into it as a hobby.

A lathe and a mill are high on my lists of things I want... including a band saw and a grinder. Then there is tooling to consider. Not really sure where to jump in. Debating on trying to find a good deal on lathe or mill via craigslist, or just buying new from grizzly and avoid potential headaches (like worn ways, issues with gearing... stuff I might miss from being a newbie and buying used).

Any suggestions?

Also... general machining thread?

Looking at some land that has an old Mobile Home thrown in .Listing says its "not too bad" but not considered as part of the sale price so its old and rough but it has a propane generator, tank and this 12 battery array..

If I were to decide I could actually start residing in the MH till I can build a dwelling what kind of use would this set up give me? Like run a refrig, lights, stereo I would eventually add PV panels just wondering how often I'd have to be running the generator as my main interest is having a quiet place.

Here's the thing; my girlfriend and I recently bought a house, before this we lived in my apartment where the rule was that I occasionally smoked. Now we decided there would be no smoking in the house except in my 'office' (I refuse to call it a 'mancave', it's a functional room with pc, printer etc., books and some colonial furniture I inherited). It's an old house with creases along the doors so the smoke odour is still very noticeable outside of the room, so I decided I wanted to ventilate it so the smoke doesn't get into the rest of the house. My first idea is to install rubber lamellae between in the creases of the door and there's a door inside of my office leading to a closet in which the central heating is housed. In there, there's one chimney pipe which isn't used, so I thought it would be an option to make a hole above this door and connect the chimney with that hole and put a ventilator in it.

What would you say are things I should pay attention to? Any suggestions? Maybe other/better options or possible problems?

Warlord anon here,

Some of you may remember I posted earlier in the year about the trip I took with my father to our home country last year and how he wanted to build an estate there/retire and give me the rest of the land.

Well. Some of you may also recall that some of the villagers on my fathers land were crazy and that African politicking is the ruin of the continent for centuries. I initially wanted to go ahead with the irrigation for the farmland and the community building for the kids/adults to learn and relax in while chipping away at the estate that my father was primarily paying for.

Yesterday morning however my father called me with some amazing news. If you recall, my fathers brother(my uncle) is a complete POS and stole over $100k and ran off to Europe leaving behind his family and doing none of the stuff to develop the land as my father had asked him to. Well he finally returned home after we left and when he saw the developments that we'd initiated, he lost his mind and did the following:

1) Burned down one of my fathers houses(the one we'd stayed in while there)

2) Rounded up a mob and beat up the engineer hired to oversee the estate foundation.

3) Beat up his wife when she got one of the village boys to go to the city and call my father. Then also beat up the boy when he returned.

4) They made idols of my father and myself, broke them on the foundation of the estate and lit it on fire.

5) The contractors got spooked/scared and all went back to the city.

6) Ranted about how my father couldn't build anything without him(When he's not contributing anything) and said he'd kill me specifically.

So my father is beyond furious(mostly because of the idol thin being serious bad voodoo) and is going back to Africa again to deal with it all.

But all the money and time put into the things we started=moot. All burnt down, vandalized, stolen. My father told me to just forget about it until he sorts it all out when he goes back. Welcome to Africa.

I bought myself a gaymer chair for 300 goddamn dollarydoos for the exclusive purpose of being able to adjust my armrest height on my slightly too high desk (so my wrists don't act as a pivot point on my desk and continue to give me nerve compression pain like normal chairs), and it's still too low for my desk.

I've read you can sometimes ask manufacturers for a bigger gas/hydraulic lift thing (I've sent them an email), if in the event they knock me back I was thinking I could get a hard plastic floor matt and stack some cardboard boxes evenly under it to raise the chair higher, but it would look tacky as fuck.

Any MacGyver-like brainboxes on here know of any hardware solutions I can make on the chair to raise the armrests or entire seat? (Desk is made of solid metal and supported by metal draws, so I can't cut it down)

Alright I need a sanity check here.
I'm trying to figure out all the calculations for a solar setup.

Here's the quick run down.

It's for aircon, so only running it in the summer, and possibly running it lightly for heat in the winter.
So 6 full sun hours.
The load is 1kw.
I want to run it for 12 hours
So ~6 hours on battery.
So I need 600Ah of 12v batteries.
And about 2.5Kw of solar panels.
Total cost currently of around $6000 at the cheapest. This is /diy/ after all.

Now the thing that I am getting stuck with is the lifetime of the batteries, in cycles.

I will want to only discharge SLA batteries to 50%, which should give me 500 cycles.
So I double the amount of batteries.
And a total cost for SLA of ~$2000

Or I could go Lifepo4 which doesn't matter for DOD as much. So if I go gown to 25% on those, I will need 666Ah, so basically 700ah.
Which would put my cost at $5600
But these cells will last 4 times as long at 2000 cycles.
And at that number, they still have 80% capacity.
So it would really be about $7000 for 900Ah on the Lifepo4 for about 2000 cycles before replacing.
I can't find a good source for this capacity loss on SLA batteries though. But the Lifepo4 obviously looks like the better solution.

Or should I just go SLA for now and hope for a better battery solution in 4 years?
This is kind of what I'm leaning towards.

Any other solutions? I've seen people using 18650 cells, but I would need like 1000 cells assuming 2Ah each. So unless I can get them for a dollar a cell, it isn't worth it at all.

Hello /diy/. I am from a shit country and wish to move to west Europe to make better life.
I know how to make lots of things but have no scholarics or qualifics.

I don't think to be an employee of someone is right for me and I think it is better to be owner/driver of myself.

Here is some works I have done before as favor or for small money. (in my country its not worth to do this as work)
I am not level:expert, but can make a nice job with autism detail that do not receive complaints.

welding of steel with arc
welding of sheet metal wit o2 and acet gas
cutting steel with o2 acet
cleaning of automobile interiors
cleaning and polish of autocar paint
painting with hair brush (vehicle or machinery)
painting with spraybrush
bodywork preparation (filler, dents repair) of autocars
rust removing from autocars
rust patch of cars
cleaning with high pressure washer + chemics of materials; wood, autocars, hard surface, etc
sharpen edges of knives, scissors and other tools
sandblasting of hard and soft surface for cleaning
sandblast for paint or remove rust.
make biodiesel from old coking oil
basic repair of small diesel engine

many other tools I can use. carpentry, electrics, appliance repair and install, gypsums and wall paint, paint hair for women, drive 8tne truck, install of solar pv systema etc I have done at my house, but I am not enough skilled or comfortable to make this a job.

I have soled many of my tools already but can take with me in a large van, different kind of hand tools, and my set of gas burners. This so I can set up a quick workshop somewhere in a farm outside of the big city. Everything else I can buy.

What does /diy/ think? I can make it?

I think maybe trying mobile welding and old car body repair welding is a good idea to begin?

Considering the Mass of a smart phone, I thought of a few options that could send my smart phone into orbit under velocity variable requirements.

- Solar Sail
- battery powered thruster
- replicate Chemical propellant rockets, except at a home-made micro level for a smart phone, like for satellites

Whats my mission ? One of them is to take photos of the entrance to hollow earth

Hello, I was thinking of building myself a sofa out of pallets, in the following link you can see what i have planned so far(including process the pic i uploaded here would be the finished result):

https://imgur.com/a/8ouaG

These are my questions:

-What kind of material should i use for the straps? -What kind of foam should i use? -I saw a lot of designs made from straps plus pillows on top of them, do you think this will be comfortable? -Any general tip to improve it is welcomed.

The idea is to make it as comfortable as possible while still mantaining a considerable price advantage over actually buying a couch.

As always, thank you very much in advance for any suggestion or comment.

For those that don't know APU stands for Auxillary Power Unit. It's job essentially is to save money and emissions for big trucks. It's a small deisle engine that keeps your truck battery charged so you can run electronics with the truck off. It recirculates deisle to keep it from gelling up in the cold. also runs climate control. Most have built in ac and a heater.

I got one given to me last night. Sadly i couldnt get pics yet but will in a few days. It's an older Parks Industries HP2000. Dont really know anything about it besides the motor runs well, so no matter what SCORE! Sadly i dont have any specs yet but it should be a small 2 or 3 cylinder deisle motor.

I'm looking for ideas on wtf to do with it. Sadly I hear real bad news about the electronics portion and they are expensive to repair. So crossing fingers i can run it as a generator for my camper.

Assuming that the electronics are shit i see that you can buy a generator head with proper outlets like a normal generator and mate to an engine. It looks pretty big from looking at others online and just idling should give plenty of power. Alternatively i could just bolt a plate to it and mount a dozen alternators to the damned thing. The generator heads are expensive.

At minimum i want to run a mini fridge, small electronics, and a 10,000btu air conditioner. So maybe 2 or 3 alternators and a battery bank would do just fine?

Any other ideas if i don't or can't turn it into a glorified camping generator?
Maybe a small hoe that pulls behind a truck? Pimped out golf cart? Don't really have use for a water pump...

Any and all ideas welcome and in a few days i should be able to get better pics and specs.

Not seeing a Raspberry Pi General thread today, so I'll start.

Anybody had an experience with using Bluetooth on an RPi? What I want to do is make the RPi a Bluetooth device that I can connect to with my phone, and control the GPIO pins from my phone. Can the RPi be configured as a Bluetooth device like this, or is it only a host? Do I need to buy in to some other Bluetooth system instead?

If it would work, any advice on writing a quick and dirty android app for the phone to create buttons that activate the GPIO pins?

I designed my girlfriend a custom shirt for a present, and now people are commenting on it saying they'd like a similar shirt. Problem is, it's a full color, full shirt, double-sided print job and the only way I know how to do that right now is ordering it from someone else. It doesn't really make economic sense to spend ~$30 to produce each custom shirt, so what would be an easier way to do it? I don't have a couple thousand to drop on a shirt printer, and screen printing won't get the job done. Are there high enough quality iron-on decals for shirts now?

This is a project I'm really into, as I speculate that different minerals with varied shapes and sizes will achieve many different frequencies [and may be varied consistencies of frequency]. Though I can only speculate as I may be slightly uninformed, sorry about that.

I have shitloads of crystals and many kinds of quartz. I also have slightly magnetic crystals with more boxed, resolved shapes. I truly want to experiment with the many natural shapes of crystals.

Oh and is the cool shapes like this star easy to make up for the radio? Does it compromise anything?

Overall, can crystals work out and how can it work?

Thanks for your time. c:

Hey, this is my first post on this board and basically I want to get better at handicraft.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to learn things like these in my childhood because my father was not able or willed to teach me anything regarding the matter. It would take a lot of time to get into that, so I am not going to, except requested.

Since there are a lot of people on this board that are skilled in handiwork, I would love some hints and leads where I could start improving in exactly that direction.

English isn't my first language, so sorry for any mistakes in writing or anything like that.

I wanna build a menger sponge. Not out of paper. Minimum level 3, 4 if I get autistic. Originally I wanted to buy 1/3in cubes, but no one seems to sell anything NEAR that size. The best I could find is 10mm blank dice. Finally it occurred to me to buy and cut rod. I plan on pinning and glueing (gluing?).

1/4in wood and acrylic are less that fiddy cent a foot. I'm not sure wood is the right material. Acrylic would look cool but I'm not sure would hold up. Delrin is looking around $1.50 a foot but not great for glue. Any other plastics just cost much more.

SO, how the fuck do I cut 1/4in cubes and have them BE square?

I have a little shop inside my 2 car garage and I'm trying to think of a way to where I won't be making noise when I'm pounding on something on my welding table or my wood work bench.

I want it to be as quiet as if my work is on the concrete slab on the floor when I'm banging on it. Specifically when I'm hammering on my alphabet punch set on something.

any ideas? Maybe pour a concrete slab on my work table?
