So me and my wife are due for a vacation. We have been a lot of places including your normie vacations. I have a family cabin that is way out in the middle of nowhere and we want to try going off the grid for a little. There isn't cell service out there last I check nor are there very many people (next to 0) this time of year. We have been out but for short bursts so we understand the basics of that. What kind of things are often overlooked when going completely off the grid? Figured here would be a good place to as since /out/. Without giving too much away its literally in a forest and will often be snowed in. A river is nearby on the land and I have decent skills in regards to food. Trip should last 6 months at least that is our goal. Civilization is accessible but like I said the snow will make it harder.

If the Northeast /out/ists are wanting to have a meetup, why not those in the eastern side of Dixie?

There are plenty of places to go, Cherokee is nice in the summer, plus there are no requirements other than camping away from streams, unlike the smokies where you have to have permits and stay in predetermined cabins.

Thoughts?

Why does all the focus here resolve around growing all your own food 100%?. Food is hella cheap already and if you have no income you get food stamps. It's such a tiny expense (6%)that if you can't afford it you can't afford your iPhones either so you won't do it anyway so fuck off It's like an argument that someone would use who doesn't want you to homestead because then they don't profit from you.

More productive discussion could focus on building a cabin or she'd or unconventional incomes by crafting or animal husbandry or specialty crops instead of imaginary cockblocks

My son will be 15, is in pretty good shape, about 6' and weights around 160 lbs. I don’t mind spending some money (Christmas + birthday) on these, but would love to keep it to less than $200 if possible. Plus, he may actually grow out of the damn things before the trip gets here! Thanks

Been shopping for a better base layer system than I already have going because I want to be comfy in cold temperatures while /out/. I see a bunch of people recommend merino wool for base layer, but I also see reviews on brands like smartwool only lasting a year before holes and pilling. I came across the Arcteryx LEAF brand and it looks like a solid setup although not 100% merino wool. Any thoughts on the brand?

What are your opinions on merino wool and it's durability? Is it worth getting something that is 100% merino wool or are wool mixes like pic related better for longevity?

Feel free to post tobaccos (no weed allowed), pipes, collections, pics of favorite combos for going /out/, pics of what you're doing with your pipe and any questions you might have.

Want to get into smoking pipes without spending too much cash?
Get a Missouri Meerschaum Legend corncob pipe and a pouch of either Prince Albert, Carter Hall or Half and Half tobacco, available at most drugstores.
What you'll need: pipe, tobacco, lighter or matches, pipe cleaners, and either a regular old nail or a pipe tool (combination tamper, scoop, and small pick).
All of these together should run you less than $20.

Having trouble keeping your pipe lit? Fill it with less tobacco and smoke it slower than you think you need to, lightly tamping as needed when the smoke starts thinning out.
If you're still having trouble, try filling your pipe this way:

Usually you hear K2 mentioned in passing when you go down some rabbit hole of Everest stories. However, K2 isn't some side-adventure that mountaineers might attempt. It's THE adventure. It only sits a few hundred feet short of Everest but this thing is a fucking pyramid. While Everest has points of gradual incline, K2 will have you scramble up or ice climb the entire way. This thing is a beast and even if you have the physicality to ascend it, it may just require a blood sacrifice from you for the hell of it. Only 300 people have summited this mountain and 77 people have died trying.

So... this thread. What is it about? Well while most of the deadly mountains have been claimed in winter, K2 has not. Why? Because it's seemingly impossible. You're looking at -40 C or below, consistent avalanches, and if you don't get to your shelter before a storm hits... you're dead. If you rest too long, you're dead. If you get snow blindness and a big storm is about to sit on top of you, you're dead. It's THE mountaineering challenge. A K2 ascent in winter. It's also suicidal. Apparently the Poles are willing to give it a shot.

A group of Polish climbers got some government money to attempt this deathwish and if they ascend before February they'll be cemented in history. There's a good chance little to none will make it back alive it they actually attempt a summit without retreat. Whatever hell you've been through during a hike through the snow or during ice climbing, it is a fraction of what these guys will go through for the continuation of their time on that savage mountain.

Oh, btw... these guys are already fucking heroes for rescuing a climber on Nanga Parbat.

Some points to remember about posting packing lists:

>Shill the make and model of your gear.
Some (or many) people will gripe at you for what gear you have/like, but you might get lucky enough to foster some insightful discussion about the exact gear you have. Maybe.

>Don't include your pocket lint.
Packing lists should primarily include the things that really matter. Listing every last thing in your pockets on your day hike isn't really going to help others learn to pack.

>Think about it.
Consider what /out/door activities that guy is probably into before you proclaim his setup to be shit for the things that you like to do.

I've been only smoking in the privacy of my home or with close friends, but avoided smoking in public places. I don't want to be the hipster who begs for attention so he does weird stuff in pubic, I just genuinely like smoking pipe tobacco.

Is pipe smoking just another excuse for hipsters to seek attention or does it look discrete/normal if someone does it in a pub ?

https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-09-02/if-you-love-the-wilderness-keep-your-dog-out-of-it

What are /out/'s thoughts on off-leash (or even leashed) dogs on public lands while hiking? Should they be allowed to hike with their owners or do they serve as a threat to wildlife and other people and ruin the enjoyable natural atmosphere?

Personally, having been aggressively approached and jumped at by off-leash big dogs on the trail (including a literal pit bull), 2 out of the last three hiking trips, I'm inclined to favor banning dogs entirely from National Forests and other lands (particularly Wilderness Areas). This wasn't some child's hike either, this was far out in a National Forest where you would expect to not have to deal with these things. I go out to get away from shitty owners and poorly trained dogs, and yet I've had more negative experiences with dogs on the trail than I've had in urban areas.

Your thoughts?

>inb4 accusations of being a cat fag

I think all feral cats should be shot on site due to their massive negative impact on natural ecosystems. Dogs and cats both have their proper place and can be great, but public land is not one of those places.

Squatting Pallet Shack - 2 - Almost arrested edition

Previous Thread: >>1200469

I fucked up lads. Almost got arrested.

Bought and transported 7 more concrete blocks this morning. All went well.

Found a guy who was willing to deliver unwanted pallets. Told him my dad just bought the land and I would meet him near by.

He comes to the place, we start unloading pallets.

Security from the oil company turn up after we unload about 20ish pallets.

I speak to the security guy away from the pallet guy. I lie to security and tell him my dad is in the process of buying the land and the pallets are for fixing the fence. He half believes me but says that I need to move them as i dont have permission to put them there and i could be fly tipping. I tell him ok. He goes, I go back to the pallet guy and tell him that he can go but leave the pallets that we've unloaded (they are sort of hidden). I give him £15 for his time and apologise that I didnt take all the pallets.

He goes and I get out of there as fast as possible.

As I hit the main road nearby I see a police car going towards me with sirens on. It passes and goes up the road where the land is. I go to macdonalds and buy coffee and hot apple pie to destress.

I need to get rid of them at my village house.
Im not allergic to wasp stings, i was stung many times, waged wars with them here in the house attic in the city.
Used chemicals and exterminated them.
Never got stung by a hornet, i think its far more serious than a bee or a wasp, even without allergies.
Horseflies are annoying and they also bite, and it hurts, but they are much faster and agile.
The badminton racket doesnt cut it anymore, i cant just go around flailing the wasps and hornets like a moron all day, but if i dont, i would have 5 or 6 of them in a single room.
The attic is clear of them, so are the sheds and the smokehouse. I cant find any nests in the forests either.
The bottle trap is ok, but it doesnt solve the problem, it just gives me the spiteful pleasure watching it fill.
I need natural, long therm solutions to make wasps and hornets stay away from my house, but i cant poison everything because the chemicals that kill hornets also damage my well being.
I dont want to just not give a fuck, the bastards fly into the bedroom at night when i need windows left open to create a draft, it gets hot up there.
I found a way to minimize the mosquitoes, i found out they lay eggs in sitting water around the house, in barrels, bowls, puddles that dont evaporate and water sources that just make certain ground wet.
I wont the mosquito war so far. Now i need to take the hornets and wasps down

Hey /out/, there's an REI puffy vest with a 60% - 40%, down - synthetic lining sitting in my work's lost-and-found. Is this blend good? is a blend even good at all, or is a 100% down lining the best?

Hello yall! Hope you have your fly rods and waders ready! I just wanted to ask all of the wonderful people here if they know of any good spots in the Eastern Appalachian states to do some good trout fishing. Im talking states from Tennessee to virginia etc. Soon the streams will be stocked full of gorgeous, succulent, meaty, mouth watering, 14 inch long, slippery rainbow and golden trout. No better time spent than fishing in a stream, far away from big cities and hordes of shit skins! Thanks in advance for the location suggestions!

Are zippos meme lighters?
Why does everyone seem to bring these camping?
I got a zippo and a knock off star lighter.
Pros:
Feels nice in hand
Easy to refuel
Last forever
All parts are replaceable
Flint sparks

Cons
Not waterproof
Fuel evaporates within 3 days!!!!!!

I put a piece of rubber glove around this to see if fuel lasts longer. No point in bring this out if the fuel is gone in a couple days.

What are good lighters guys?
Ps I think bics are just not aesthetic enough to own.

Kinda new here, but I have to do a "how to" speech in which I teach people how to do something. I was thinking of doing something outdoors related as I have a bit of experience with stuff like that. I'm having trouble, though, finding something specific I could teach in about 40 minutes. Any help is appreciated. (Pic unrelated)

I assume threads like these pop up all the time, but please bear with me.
You guys know stuff about camping, equipment, food, shelters. I know none of this stuff.
I want to go hiking, surviving in forests, traversing the land. I have no experience. Where do I get it? How long until I can consider myself self-sufficient in these things?
Do I just go to the nearest forest and sleep in a tent?

For my next pair of glasses I am looking for something utilitarian but with some style. Something fitting for construction and camping. Glasses that wrap around the ear would be a interesting try. Thanks.

I'm looking for the quietest hunting boot. I typically do spot-and-stalk, and sometimes I'm travelling on logging roads. Currently I'm using a pair of irish setter boots, specifically the Vaprtrek pair. They're fucking noisy.

I'm trying to find a pair that has a super soft sole that almost absorbs the ground that it covers without making a shit ton of noise.

What does /out/ recommend?

Hey /out/

There's this patch of wooded land, roughly 70 acres behind my house. I think I can pull off stealth camping in it, but there are horses, cows, foxes coyotes, a couple bears, and turkeys all in it.

Is it safe to try sleeping next to those animals, specifically the livestock?
