The new release of the NetBSD UNIX distribution has just been released. This distribution based on the 4.4BSD operating system gives the user a super secure and reliable server operating system that is fully capable of powering an Apache http server; a mail server or MySQL database. This operating system using a UNIX kernel and is far more reliable and secure than a Windows Server 2008 or 2012 installation. I have installed and configured the Windows Server 2008 product and it is quite easy to setup a web server by installing the DNS and IIS server roles to provide a web server that is accessible over a network; I still prefer Linux for web hosting as installing the Apache http server and getting a basic page running using PHP is quite simple. it is easy then to configure and install WordPress to create a quick blog. The NetBSD UNIX operating system would be a good candidate for running your web server; or the super-secure OpenBSD operating system. There is a large list of download mirrors on this download page: http://www.netbsd.org/mirrors/.
There is some useful information about the workings of the NetBSD kernel here: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/aix/library/au-netbsd.html. I recommend downloading this operating system and giving it a try if you want something different to try out on your system.
