The new Linux Mint 16 MATE desktop is better than ever, I am running it in VMware and it runs like a dream. It is based on the 3.11 Linux kernel and uses the same desktop theme and layout as the previous releases. But this is a good thing. The performance is extremely good.
Firefox 24 is bundled as well as the MATE desktop version 1.6.1. This offers the same quality desktop experience as in previous Linux Mint releases. The ISO is 1.24 Gigabytes, but this is well worth the download time.
Libreoffice 4.1.2.3 is the bundled office suite. This is easily up to the task of creating documents and spreadsheets. There is also a utility for configuring the preferences for the MDM login manager.
There are animated HTML5 themes that are available to make your MDM login screen look even better than the static GDM themes.
The GIMP image editor is supplied as well for photo editing and creating graphics. I wish that Linux distributions would ship a simple graphics editor like MS paint though. That would be very useful indeed. You do not always want to load the GIMP just to create a simple graphic. Download the Linux Mint 16 desktop distribution today and you will be very happy with it. A very worthwhile alternative to Windows.
