To get a nice Gnome 2.32.1 styled desktop layout in Gnome 3 install the files from the tarball hosted on this website and then restart Gnome Shell to enable the bottom panel and a Gnome 2 styled Gnome menu. http://intgat.tigress.co.uk/rmy/extensions/index.html. The resulting desktop will look like the example to the right, my Fedora 15 Gnome 3 desktop with Xmms and the Gnome Terminal application running. I knew that eventually someone would make a nice extension to return a sensible layout to the Gnome 3 desktop. Just download the tarball and then extract the .local folder inside it to your ~/.local folder in your home directory. Then press Alt-F2, type “r” and hit Enter to restart the Gnome 3 desktop. See, Gnome 3 is not as bad as people have said after all! All of the icons from the quick access panel on the left of the screen are transferred to the top panel for easy access, but the hot corner in the top left of the desktop is still there, but it is made smaller so that you will not accidentally hit it when moving the mouse to the Gnome menu. All in all, this makes the Gnome 3 desktop just perfect for me as a day to day desktop environment.
