Welcome to /diy/, a place to:

Post and discuss /diy/ projects, ask questions regarding /diy/ topics and exchange ideas and techniques.

Please keep in mind:
- This is a SFW board. No fleshlights or other sex toys.
- No weapons. That goes to /k/ - Weapons. The workmanship and techniques involved in creating objects which could be used as weapons or the portion of a weapons project that involves them (e.g., forging steel for a blade, machining for gunsmithing, what epoxy can I use to fix my bow) may be discussed in /diy/, but discussing weapon-specific techniques/designs or the actual use of weapons is disallowed. Things such as fixed blade knives or axes are considered tools, things such as swords, guns or explosives are considered weapons.
- No drugs or drug paraphernalia (See Global Rule 1). If you want to discuss something that could involve such things (e.g., carving a tobacco pipe from wood) that's fine, but make sure it's /diy/ related and doesn't involve drugs or it will result in deletion/ban.

Piezos for dogs

Thread no: 2784568 - Thread date: 04/09/24(Tue)23:16:22. Replies: 53.

Anyone have any success with silencing dogs or making they act like utter lunatics?

I have a dog hoarder neighbor who never walks her dogs, refuses to get a real fence so they can't see to the street, and I think is a mentally ill alcoholic.

Naturally, the dogs bark at literally everything that moves.

>inb4 talk to your neighbor.
did that, she still has done literally nothing.

>inb4 talk to the town
did that, they say she's violating noise ordinance, call non emerg police.
If I start doing that, I want the dogs to be acting like complete nutcases when they arrive.

Anyway, I'm dealing with an exceptional neighbor, I just want to effect the problem one way or another, with silence or entertainment.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

The design for this thing is so compelling, but most of it is a gaming thing. What features would you have built into it for doing real things with it while having your hands free?

Things I can think of (besides radio, mp3, clock, messaging, etc):
- Network monitoring: ping when some device just signed in to the home wifi (people are back home)
- Scanning for wifi fransmitters (bugs)
- tracking GPS
- mesh network

Anyone else do their own HVAC and refrigeration work? Working on this 1960's Westinghouse dehumidifier right now. Changed oil, switched to r12a, added a filter/drier, but seems that the capillary tube is partially blocked. Head pressure soars and thermal overload trips. Once that is replaced should be good for another 60 years of service.

is it possible to make a safe, small scale reactor capable of providing energy for a medium class home? How much would be it’s price ?
How much knowledge would be needed to handle such a device? Would a housewife be able to handle it with newly developed technologies?

And if an accident happened:
How large would be the area of effect?

The air coming out of the registers is room temperature. I listened to the condenser outside and it's not making any humming noises, fan is spinning just fine. Could it still be a bad capacitor? Maybe tomorrow when it's light out I could try cleaning the condenser coils. If it's not the coils or capacitor does that mean it's low on refrigerant? The unit is 6yrs old. Tried to do research before posting (lennox system in typical ranch house)

I had to push wads of grease 75' deep twice yesterday to clear apartment sink drains. Pulling the snake back out was extremely slow and took me pulling as hard as I could for an hour and a half straight both times. I'm a pretty big strong guy, have great grip strength in particular, but I woke up and can't even make a fist with one hand without my joints almost locking in place with pretty startling pain. My shoulders are also fried. If I had to do the same thing today I'd have to flat out refuse. What am I doing wrong? That was the most strenuous thing I ever had to do for work and I've done some rough shit in the past.

Yesterday I made my first flask from a spare fencepost, and some greensand from sifted playsand and a mix of sodium bentonite and calcium bentonite. Yard marking calcium carbonate as parting powder, worked great. Designed a little ashtray in Fusion360 and turned it into a pattern. I did a pretty bad job but I was impatient and really wanted everything ready to do this casting today. Rammed up fine, might've been a little dry, but just barely. Worked out okay though, very happy with the result after a brief cleanup.

Do you scrap? Stack? Do you sell signs on Etsy? Do you sand cast? Investment casting? Do you like huffing zinc fumes and snorting silica powder? Show me your furnace, show me your castings.

Idiots on Reddit didn't believe me, so here I am.

Pool noodle rotted my joist in 2 days??

I'm going to start a workout in my unfinished basement where I do some step-ups on a stool. I don't have a lot of height and my head has to go between the joists, so I thought I had a brilliant idea to guard the edges with some (brand new) foam pool noodles. See the photos.

As life goes, I put just one up two days ago, and came back today to put up a few more. I decided to move the initial one, and the piece of the joist under the first noodle is now wet and rotted?? A chunk actually ripped off!

What in the world happened? It's not like the foam noodle was wet, and the joist appears dry like the rest of my basement... save this one suddenly-wet, suddenly-rotted spot?

I'm now beyond wary of using pool noodles on the joists, which I saw online in the first place.

What happened, and so quickly?

1.) I now know about bark wood

2.) the area is actually damp to the touch, but air drying quickly

3.) it was NOT like that before, which is what the /r/DIY dingalings told me, as if I wouldn't know that.

See 3 pics. Thanks for any insight.

I have an old ass vacuum breaker on my hose bib, probably been there 15-20 years, way before I bought the house. it's leaking water from the top so I want to get it off. I took a pair of locking pliars to it, but I can't seem to get it off. I can turn it, and I have turned it in the off direction around 3 revolutions but it's SO hard, I have to put my body weight onto the wrench. I'm afraid I'm going to break my damn hose bib trying to get it off. any advice? are they threaded backwards and I'm tightening the shit out of it? so weird.

Is there such a thing as a flat head socket screw but with the socket at the tip of the screw, leaving the head completely flat? I would be using such a screw to mount the fascia of a model train layout.

Here we discuss microcontrollers (MCUs), single board computers (SBCs), and their accessories, such as Atmel mega and tiny AVRs (Arduinos), PICs, ARM boards such as blue/black pill STM32, ESP8266/32s, RP2040, Raspberry Pi, and others.

For general electronics questions (power supplies, level shifting, motor driving, etc.) please ask /ohm/.

>where can I find verified quality microcontrollers and other electronic sensors or parts
digikey.com
mouser.com
arrow.com
newark.com

>but that's too expensive
aliexpress.com (many parts here are fake, particularly specific parts out of stock in the above sites)
lcsc.com

>I need a part that does X and Y, with Z specifications. How can I find it?
use DigiKey's or Octopart's parametric part search. Then purchase from one of the sellers listed above.

>how do I get started with microcontrollers, where should I start?
There is no defined starting point, grab a book and start reading or buy an arduino off ebay/amazon and start messing around. There are a plethora of examples online to get started.

What are the best chemicals for breaking down shit that's stuck to dirty kitchen equipment? Dishwashing liquid is inferior. There must be better shit out there. I actually talked with my coworker a while ago about introducing acetone to the kitchen for cleaning certain shit. I fucking hate scrubbing shit for literal hours. I lift weights, and this is really fucking with my gains, since I end up staying sore in my right arm. I don't always have time to let shit soak in dishwashing liquid, and even then, it doesn't work all that great. It helps to make certain shit easier to scrub off with steel wool, but there's usually still some gunk that's really baked into the kitchen equipment. This is a major kitchen that serves between 150 to 300 people each day for at least two days out of the week. I don't have time to take things slow, because my boss and coworker would kill me.

This is a project to build rural villages out of spare resources and volunteer labor. They function as open art colonies, music venues, public workshops, gathering places, community gardens, places of free education, and whatever other purpose each village decides. Like the parable of rock soup, each place, and this project, is started from nothing, and comes together as collaborators offer what they can give freely.

Carpenters, musicians, farmhands, architects, sculptors, etc…anyone with expertise, as well as resources: spare wood, tools, electrical equipment, art supplies…all are welcome ingredients in every stew. The biggest hurdle is for someone to contribute a plot of land, for if all of this comes pro bono, then a village for all, a canvas of experience, a modern day forum, can come together without the handling of money corrupting the core concept…

I am currently somewhere similar and it has all that life needs, and it is very free. All that I can think about while I’m here is that there must be more places like this. All of the people love it here because it is not about money, but it is neither about ideology. It is just a place that people are allowed to be human beings.

Every village created with this project can be completely unique, yet each shares the trait in that it is like an open home, and with that comes the law of respect and common sense. The rest can be solved on a case by case basis (see: common sense). A blend of artists and people that actually know how to make things…this creates a good ambiance with as well the productivity. Those who don’t know what they are can help around and find out.

In essence, it is a DIY life, but with the common goal of a place for the people emerging out of all of the pieces that are contributed…the soup emerging from the ingredients brought by all the neighbors.

Hello,

I recently had a locksmith come to my house to open an older gun safe that I had and forgot the combination to. He drilled a small hole about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch wide through the door and unlocked it with a borescope. Nothing of particular interest was inside, but now I have a nice safe with hole on the door next to the dial.

Is there anyway I can patch up or remedy the hole to at least make it look like nothing happened to it? I was thinking some kind of industrial putty and maybe smoothing over it before repainting.

Welcome to /pjg/, the general discussion thread for piss jugs. What is the status of your piss jug now?
>Piss jugs accumulating?
Find uses for old urine in this thread. Stories welcome.

Piss Jug FAQ

Why use a piss jug?
>It does WONDERS for my sleep, as opposed to getting up and walking out to the bathroom.

What is the chemical formula?
>Human urine consists primarily of water (91% to 96%), with organic solutes including urea, creatinine, uric acid, and trace amounts of enzymes, carbohydrates, hormones, fatty acids, pigments, and mucins, and inorganic ions such as sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), chloride (Cl-), magnesium (Mg2+), calcium (Ca2+), ammonium (NH4+), sulfates (SO42-), and phosphates (e.g., PO43-).

Why does piss have a suffocating odor?
>When the body breaks down proteins for energy, it releases fixed nitrogen that has to be dealt with. The body turns it into urea and excretes it. Urea and water form an equilibrium reaction with CO2 and ammonia. "CO(NH2)2 + H2O <--> 2NH3 + CO2" Therefore, when urea is dissolved in water it slowly converts to ammonia, giving piss its suffocating odor.

Does piss fertilizer build up heavy metals in the soil?
>According to one anon, yes. But the study was in China and referencing farmlands that are flooded with sewage. If the heavy metals aren't present in the food or water source, it is fairly unlikely to occur.

Ways to dispose of old piss
>Turn bath tub facet in cold. Dump each individual bottle into the running water and let it go down the drain.
OR
>Dump on the compost pile. Don't allow piss to sit for long periods as it will form amonia.

Whats the best piss jug?
>Nalgene Bottle. Milk jugs, tea jugs, gatorade bottle, detergent bottle, folgers coffee container.

Uses for old piss?
>Putting nitrogen into compost. Fertilizing Compost. Making Struvite fertilzer. Keeping away animals. Dissolving sticklac (raw shellac with the dye and wax).

I have found a good site with a lot of sound proofing advice and products. I like their "best" solution but one section is confusing. I have made a convenient screen cap that you can look at or you can visit the site here: https://www.soundproofcow.com/existing-wall-soundproofing-assemblies/

This part is unclear: are they actually saying that you leave a 1/4 inch gap everywhere, including between the panel and the existing wall, and you fill that entire area with sound sealant, which makes sense acoustically but would be very difficult. Or, are they just referring to the gaps around the edges of the panels where they butt up against the existing wall or an adjacent panel.

I live near a lot of mexicans; if you are familiar with their culture you understand the need for sound abatement. Imagine this shit at 3 am (turn it up as loud as your speakers can handle - I think that's a rule): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3lW8zAHwSE

Bros,
How would you paint black or darken the metal frame on pic related?
I've tried a couple of methods so far:
>Hot bluing
Not the results I was expecting. Too light tone and not that scratch resistant.

>Epoxy paint (Rust-Oleum Appliance Epoxy)
Looks great but not durable at all. The paint just comes off too easily.
Is there a primer I should use or special paint/method?
I've consider cold bluing, but the liquid is quite expensive. Also some say the piece smells bad after going through this process.

I would like to make it more of a permanent thing so I can just flip a switch when I shower.
Any suggestions on a through wall setup? My idea was to buy an appropriate sized pvc and run it through the wall. Having the outside be a drier exhaust vent with the flaps that shut when it's off. So no worries of birds or bugs. All plastic so no worry of rust or condensation.
Any better ideas though?

I'm not an engineer, I just like to make stuff. Naturally, lots of the content I watch often happens to be made by engineers (or engineering students), and seeing them go about making things sometimes makes me wanna kms. You've got a team of 5 dudes making a rc car, each bro i would assume assigned with his own task, trying to calculate every single thing that could possibly be calculated around said rc car before they ever dare to assemble the real thing. Listen I get why the methodology exist and I'm grateful for it, I don't want our buildings or bridges or commercial airliners to be eye balled, but following this workflow whilst trying to create something new is grating to watch. What happened to trying shit out? That's what the OGs did in the early 1900s and it looks a lot more fun than how we're going about it today.

Now I have to clean it up and throw away a ton of old-people stuff old people tend to collect (lifetime supply of rusty screws and bolts and mousetraps).
That's not so bad. But the place reeks like it looks.
How can I make it smell better? I'm not into homosexual scents like vanilla, flowers or whatever femoids buy for the home smell. I'd rather have a non-gay manly smell like pine or so.
Pls give tips how to get rid of old people dementia smell and make workshop smell rly nice.

At some point in the future, I'd like to remove the aluminum siding, strip the old siding off completely, install 2x4s on the frame, put a vapor barrier and R-15 Rockwool in, and then nail the aluminum siding back on.

My main goal is sound reduction. (I'm tired as fuck of being able to hear neighbors talking in their yards from the opposite side of my place.) Saving money on gas and electricity is a bonus.

That's the scenario. Here are the questions.

First, am I going to actually get my money's worth from this in terms of sound reduction? (I'm aware that mass-loaded vinyl would be better, but that would damn near double the estimated cost. I don't want to do that unless it's absolutely necessary.) I don't want to drop money and time on materials and labor for no real results.

Second, if there is a better cheap option besides mass-loaded vinyl, what is it?

Third, am I missing anything or making any glaring mistakes?

DIY Metal Casting? How the nigger nickle balls do I do this for under $2000 USD?

As in title.

>Be me, autist pepe living in Asia
>International shipping is "HOLY SHIT" expensive
>Want to cast really cool shit in metal (maybe Britannia Pewter or possibly Bi58Sn42 or hell maybe even just rose's metal or some lead-toxic gay shit like that)
>Have a resin 3d printer, want to pour high-heat silicon molds around my print, or maybe high-end plaster?
>Then want to vacuum cast metal into it using DIY vacuum table

But like... a burnout furnace costs $800 minimum??? And they're TINY! Like 6" tiny. Wtf am I supposed to cast in something that's supposed to be smaller than a mold that's supposed to be smaller than a perforated steel flask that's supposed to be smaller than 6 inches?

Nigger nickel balls!

A vacuum cast setup starts at $1200 (lol. LMAO even. Built my own for $120, including the vacuum pump)

An electric furnace costs $200 but I just stomach that, whatever. I don't want to ghetto-rig a microwave kiln in my yuppie apartment.

My main issue here as you can probably tell is this burnout kiln shit. It makes no sense to me how a furnace that can heat to 2000F costs 200 but a burnout kiln (wtf even is the difference? Don't they both just heat shit?) costs four times that and needs to run for TWELVE HOURS? I might get a visit from the police if I consume that much electricity kek

So anons, TL:DR, do I need this burnout furnace for investment casting? Can I get away with just molding silicon around my resin 3d print? Is silicon even porous enough to work with vacuum casting or does it HAVE to be plaster (and if so, does that plaster HAVE to be in a burnout kiln?)

The internet is giving me mixed signals about this. Some say I can get into this hobby with $100, a vacuum cleaner and a used microwave. Others are like nO yOu mUsT sPeNd $10,000 oN a mEtAl fLaSk aNd $30,000 oN a pAiR oF sAfEtY gOgGlEs.

Tell me what to do, anons. I'm ready to burn down my building (will be doing this on a ventilated balcony). Kek

Recently shortened a front driveshaft for my 2000 F-350 with the V10 and manual transmission. Could find front driveshafts for automatic transmissions all day long for sub $200 while the proper one for my manual transmission was anywhere from $600-1000.

So a little bit of choppy choppy, some indicating in, and welding, and I have the right length driveshaft and saved myself some coin.

The reason for the thread is once I cut the end off to shorten the tube I found this rolled up cardboard inside. What is the reasoning for this? Is it supposed to help dampen harmonic resonance or was it in there for some other reason? I have shortened several driveshafts and this is the first time I have ever encountered rolled up cardboard in the tube.

I ended up with about 0.07 thousandths of runout at the end. Had do do some tacking, then indicating, cut a tack, tap it in, re-indicate, etc. for a bit to get er all nice and true, but it runs smooth as silk at 70 down the highway now, whereas before it was bad at 20mph. The old center ball on the double cardan was completely wallered out and even the splines on the slip yoke were getting worn and sloppy.

I'm renting out what's essentially a patch of grass in a shitty neighborhood for around thirty-five bucks a month and was thinking of building myself a tiny hovel.

hi anons
I got a PSION ORGANIZER MODEL XP (one of the first pocket computers introduced in 1986) with the ever rare HP BARCODE pen, and a comms link. This runs mostly flawless but coding for it is a pain without a adapter for the comms link that works with modern machinery. Pretty sure the comms link is 24+ pins.

And I got a receiver apart of a larger stereo set, although I only got one of the speakers for it.
SEARS RE-1205 would be the model, with exactly zero instructions. Main issues are the static that is encountered with most of the potentiometer controls, especially when switching functions, the volume knob works fine, but the mode/func switch (AM, FM, FM AUTO, 8TRACK, etc) tends to not switch over to the function properly and needs a bit of wiggling to get it stuck on the proper function. Would this just be loose contacts inside the potentiometer itself? Otherwise the 8track door for inserting tapes is somewhat broken, and the display cover covering the FM/AM display is loose.

Final thing I got is pretty much a vintage "BOOMBOX" manufactured in KOREA by MTC with the model number MS-3022, can't find info at all about it and there is barely any online mention, and the only thing I've found related to it was a larger/more deluxe model with shortwave radio capability (MTC-3030).

Anyway the only thing wrong with this is the tape recording function being broken, and playing cassettes inside of it being broken, I already ripped it apart but can't find the drive belt or figure out why it's not recording onto tapes. The buttons for the cassette player often tend to stick/not work properly too, especially on play/record.

any anons here skilled or knowledgeable in vintage electronics repair?

Picrel is internals of the MTC-BOOMBOX

Does anyone know the best method for making a circular cut into the lower portion of my computer chassis? I know very little about DIY and am not sure if using a jigsaw would be appropriate for this project. I want to conceal a pringles can stuffed with some towels on the bottom so it can be used as an all in one goon device. I got the idea because there's a bunch of usable space inside the chassis. Plus it has a nice carrying handle and would look very inconspicuous when sitting on my lap on public transportation.

When electricity prices peak during the winter, buying firewood becomes cheaper than electric heating. This got me thinking, would it be viable to use the heat generated by burning wood to generate electricity as well?

A steam engine doesn't have a great efficiency in turning heat into motion, but if heating is the primary reason of burning wood, the amount of heat "lost" to the building around the engine isn't really lost at all. And with heating taken care of, a 2 horsepower engine producing 1 kilowatt of power would be enough to run the rest of the household appliances as a bonus.

I looked into steam turbines as well, but apparently the steam would have to be extremely hot to avoid reducing their lifespan. Steam engines on the other hand are way less picky about the heat and moisture, and have greater tolerance for manufacturing imperfections. The main issue I can think of is how to get the pistons tight enough that no steam gets out, because any moisture escaping the closed loop of boiler-engine-condenser could cause moisture damage to the building. So, what do you think?

Not sure if this is the right board for this, but I can't think of a better one.

I was going through some old boxes that were in storage recently when I happened across my childhood 'coin collection,' AKA an old film container loaded with a few dozen random old coins given to me by family members over the years. A lot of them were so old and dirty that you couldn't even make out what they were, so I tried cleaning them off with soapy water and vinegar. That got most of them clean, but some were so dirty that I had to leave them to soak overnight; when I came back, a lot of the silver and brass ones were either tinted with a copper hue or they had ugly, rusty-looking patches all over them from air-drying.

Is there anything I can do to restore them? Did I fuck everything up?

I'm finding it difficult to land a plumbing apprenticeship and need to know what the bottom line is. Do you actually have to go to school to do this shit?

I have done apartment maintenance for 6 months total on a variety of buildings+occasional installation working for myself and have not found any plumbing issue to be particularly difficult to fix once I know how what the issue is. I want a license and I'm fine with putting in the 5 years, but the idea of going to school for 2 years for this makes my skin crawl. On the other hand, the non-union companies willing to hire me are full on scam artists where 90% of it is sales.

If I have to go the union route, I will, but if there is any possible way to avoid wasting 2 years of my life learning righty-tighty lefty-loosey, I would like to know.

I've had this broken kitchen tile right next to my computer chair for a while now, and I thought nothing of it until I read that it could contain asbestos and that could give me lung cancer.

any way to tell if this tile has asbestos in it? Internet says they used asbestos for literally everything in the past because it was cheap and effective, so to me that means it's likely. Don't remember how long it's been like this, probably a couple years at the least. I remember the corner peeled up a while back and then snapped off when I rolled my computer chair on it. I threw away the broken pieces.
>Apartment building was made in the 60's in the US, tiles are 12x12 inches, kind of a grey/blue/beige color. I believe they're vinyl
>I don't have a fan on it or anything, it just sits there with that crumbled corner. I try not to roll on it
How fucked are my lungs from this? Should I replace the tile or just leave it?

I want to build an electric elevator bed for my room:
>Queen to king-sized
>Stroke-length (minimum to maximum height) of at least 30 inches, preferably up to 36 inches
>Built into the corner of the room
I was thinking of using linear actuators with hall-effect sensors (to have all legs be synchronized), one in each leg (lumber legs, 4x4, 6x6, or whatever size as needed), to move the elevator bed up and down.
I was thinking 3 of the legs could be mounted to the walls, and the 4th leg be mounted to the ceiling joist at the top, and into the concrete foundation at the bottom.
My questions are:
1. How do I dress up the construction so it looks as dressed-up as pic related (Cinius "Rising" loft bed)
2. Are there better solutions than hall effect linear actuators? (For example, https://www.progressiveautomations.com/products/hall-effect-sensor-actuator?variant=18283068620867). From their videos they seem to move rather slowly, plus the memory resets if power is shutoff.
3.What is the best way to secure the actuators to the legs?
4. Anything else I should know or watch out for?
