The classic Sci-Fi stories and artwork of the 1970s were truly the best. The artwork was full of soul and made you want to read the stories they advertised. There are a few picture books in the “Galactic Encounters” art series that contain lovely Sci-Fi artwork that is amazing to look at, and the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction also contains a collection of lovely art from the heyday of the 1970s. The paintings of starships and great space battles have a true soul that AI-generated artwork does not have. This AI-generated picture I created with Bing AI looks terrible in comparison, as it uses modern Sci-Fi as inspiration and does not capture the feel of the older artworks from Chris Foss for example. He could paint amazing starships, even his work for the Jodorowsky Dune Guild Heighliner is amazing. He includes so much detail and it is incredible what he could imagine.
Three concept art by the legendary Chris Foss for Jodorowsky's Dune (canceled circa 1975) and Alien (1979) are up in auction right now!

Why does AI artwork have so much random noise in it? This is what Sci-Fi artwork should look like: https://i.ibb.co/Cvv4wMM/Screenshot-2024-03-13-at-10-03-53-Star-quest-an-incredible-voyage-into-the-unknown-Caldwell-Steven-1.png. That is an incredible picture. Maybe if you used multiple Nvidia A100 GPUs in a cluster you could render something better with AI. If you spent $500,000 on a server farm, it would be easier. But the original artwork is light-years ahead of anything we can paint today, the Chris Foss artwork for the Foundation novels, as well as the E. E. ‘Doc’ Smith books, is the true definition of amazing art. Why can AI not paint with any soul? Angus McKie is another artist who painted nice artwork, especially the front cover artwork for the Terran Trade Authority Handbook SPACECRAFT 2000 To 2100 AD. The long-running Analog Sci-Fi series of Science Fiction books had a good collection of stories in them and very nice cover artwork. This launched in 1930 and is still running today. So, there is still a thirst for quality Science Fiction. Even the older Amazing Stories books from the 1920s had amazing artwork on the covers.
