There is a nice alternative to Windirstat for Linux available. The Graphical Disk Map utility for Linux allows a user to open a folder in the program and then see which files are taking up the most space. This is a great way to clean up your hard drive and save disk space.
Install it like this.
To have grep return the string you are looking for without checking for upper or lower case use '-i'. e.g. grep -i readme somefile.txt ┌─[jason@jason-desktop]─[~] └──╼ $sudo apt install gdmap |
Then run the gdmap utility and then open a folder to view the contents.
This is the best way to visualize what actually is taking up all of the disk space on your computer. In the example below, there is a grey folder on the left side, this has a lot of PDF files in it, and it takes up the most disk space of all.
Double-click on a box to open it. This allows you to zoom in and find smaller files. Overall, this is a great application. A free version of Windirstat. There is also Wiztreefree as well. But this is Linux I am talking about.
