Twitch website database contents and software leaked by a malicious agent.

The databases and internal software of the Twitch video streaming platform have been leaked on the Internet. Twitch is an American video live streaming service that focuses on video game live streaming, including broadcasts of esports competitions, operated by Twitch Interactive, a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc.

This leak includes the following.

  • Entirety of twitch.tv, with commit history going back to its early beginnings
  • Mobile, desktop and video game console Twitch clients
  • Various proprietary SDKs and internal AWS services used by Twitch
  • Every other property that Twitch owns including IGDB and CurseForge
  • An unreleased Steam competitor from Amazon Game Studios
  • Twitch SOC internal red teaming tools

Who will be next? Facebook had a leak and Twitter. Will Wechat be next? This is getting out of hand. But the information gained is very useful. Twitch uses free software to process video. A lot of Python coding and FFmpeg to process user videos. That is very good. But it seems that internal security cannot stop a determined person inside the company from leaking user information. That is the Achilles heel of data security. You cannot stop someone from stealing data and sneaking out with it. Unless you logged all access to the data and then discovered what they were doing. But this must have been it. An outside hack does not sound reasonable, it must have been an employee that accessed the data and then uploaded it to the Internet in a 128 GiB torrent file. And this is only part one. Part two is coming soon as well. That will leak even more data. How much damage will this do to the stock price of the company? This can not be good when you trust a website with credit card information and personal details and then it is all leaked online. That does not bode well for further user trust in large websites like this. Apparently, the user “CriticalRole” is the highest-earning user on twitch. Earning nearly a million dollars. That is impressive. Far higher earnings than Ninja.

Although Ninja has a character of himself in League of Legends. So that is braggable. But really, we need to greatly improve the security of the Internet to make it a safer place. Leaks like this are fun to trawl through I guess, but the second one will be killer, it will have credit card information and other good stuff. Which should have been stored with a greater level of security in the first place, and then it would not have been stolen. But maybe it is hard to feel sorry for Twitch when they make so much money from users.
