Russia is planning to create their own Linux-based operating system to replace the insecure and crash prone Windows operating system. This on the back of the Red Flag operating system from China. India have also announced that they are planning to create their own super secure operating system to use in deference to the malware prone operating system from Redmond.
When Russia can run their own operating system and not rely on Microsoft for their operating system and updates, then they will be more independent and computer users in Russia will enjoy the security and stability that comes from using Linux instead of Microsoft Windows. There is a posting here that says that they are planning to install this operating system in every school in Russia to offer educational software for children without needing to install comprehensive security software such as Norton 360. There is a good article on Wikipedia that lists adopters of the Linux operating system and there is good uptake of Linux in China even though they can get Windows for free due to rampant piracy. That is a good sign.
