Gnome is still discussing icons in the file picker after 18 years. The first request for this feature was in 2004 and we are still talking about this in 2022. The latest demand fell on deaf ears, even if it was implemented back in Windows `98 by Microsoft. But I guess a Linux user can use KDE instead, that might be a better idea. I mean, Mac OSX, has video thumbnails that can play the video in the thumbnail and allow it to be previewed. Gnome will never have that feature at all. The developers just could not be bothered at all. Windows has had icons in the file picker for a very long time. Are the developers of Gnome sabotaging the desktop environment by not adding such a simple feature? When will we see such a simple addition to the Linux desktop? One way to get icons working is to install the xdg-desktop-portal-kde package and remove xdg-desktop-portal-gtk and you get the qt file picker instead which has thumbnails. use the command below to run Firefox using this system.

GTK_USE_PORTAL=1 firefox
|
But a better system is really needed in 2022.
Wow.
Just wow.
