I started my Linux server today and it was switching on and then of again in an infinite loop. I cleaned all of the fans and then replaced the BIOS battery and left it unplugged for a while. This fixed the issue with the boot loop. I had to plug in a keyboard and monitor to see the boot messages, which is annoying, but is good that I managed to fix it. Button batteries do not last forever, so they need replacing every so often. But it is amazing that the problem came on so suddenly. But as I said, this was fixable. Just annoying. The battery is supposed to last a fair while, but it only lasts a year or so for me. So, that is how you can fix the annoying switch-on switch-off loop. Just replace the BIOS battery. Why have we not invented a better technology than the humble BIOS battery by now? But having a headless Linux server is very helpful, I can use Xephyr to load a Linux desktop in a window over SSH.
And the MATE desktop is still the best Linux desktop to run on Linux. Way better than the bloated and mobile / tablet-oriented Gnome Shell mess. Does Gnome even use the extensions system anymore? That was one good thing, but MATE does have useful add-ons like a weather app and other nice add-ons for the MATE panel.
