Gnome 42 desktop release is more bloated than ever and dumbed down as well.

The new Gnome 42 desktop release has some doubtful design decisions. One of them is removing the terminal and adding a custom terminal application called Console, but this is apparently worse. Gnome Terminal was just fine to use, now they have a worse application you are supposed to use. The new Console app has fewer features and greater memory usage which is standard fare when you are coding in 2022. The skill of programmers is going down the toilet, they are just adding more and more code to get things working and it is less efficient. That is the state of development in the 21st century. There is a new text editor with less features and probably greater memory usage as well. And the plugins feature has been removed so you can not even add more functionality by installing a plugin. This is a step backwards. Even the new file manager named “Files” is heavier on memory usage and is as slow as using an online FTP site. Gone are the days of super-fast Gnome 2 desktop interfaces that were a pleasure to use. Now everything is stuffed with bloated code and is unusable in the extreme. You are better off using MATE instead.

The screenshot above shows a Gnome 2 Ubuntu 5.10 desktop. This was very fast and fun to use. Where did we go wrong? Why is everything so bloated and the mobile interface is taking over from common sense? Why can we not install Gnome Extensions within the settings dialogue? Why do we need a Firefox Extension to allow installation of the addon we want to fix the many problems with the Gnome desktop? Why not just use MATE or Xfce 4 instead of this bloated mess? I think the Gnome developers are attempting to sabotage Linux and make it look as bad as possible. This is the only explanation. The Windows 11 interface is better than Gnome 42. That is undeniable. It is very fast and usable. I wish Linux had one unified desktop interface that was very fast and familiar to Windows users with light memory usage. Instead of a horrendous tablet interface we see in Gnome 42, we need a better desktop environment that should be the basis for a Linux distribution that is aimed at users that come from Windows and offers the same interface and nothing gets in the way of the user. But Gnome is the opposite.
