Why is the size of the moon exactly the right size to block out the sun at certain times? This is very strange. It is perfectly sized to block out the sun and form a black circle in the sky. The sun is 400 times larger than the moon, and 400 times further away. I do not know if this is a coincidence or not. But this is a mystery for sure. We will never truly know why this is. One thing is for sure, the moon was formed by a massive impact that melted the whole surface of the Earth. This created a ring around the planet of rock that coalesced into a solid moon. And it originally was much closer to the planet than it is now. And it is slowly moving away from the Earth. At an inch per year. When it was formed, it was 15,000 to 20,000 kilometers from the Earth, it would have looked much bigger in the sky than it does now. So I guess it is just the right time now to observe the moon when it is in the exact position from our planet to match the size of the sun.
