Ubuntu 20.04 is the best version of Ubuntu yet, with a lot of improvements over the older LTS versions. This has a very nice Gnome desktop with a lovely dark theme for night time use. I tried updating my 18.04 to 20.04 but I got an error with the package manager, so it is better to reinstall with a fresh new installation, this makes much more sense. There is a very nice utility available for the new Ubuntu version called piper, this allows configuration of a gaming mouse on Linux. This can be installed with the sudo apt install piper
command.
This allows a user to configure the mouse lights and the various buttons for the device. This would be very useful for any gamer on Linux. And watching television over the Internet with mpv works as well. This allows streaming television with a media player and does not require a TV tuner. This makes it very convenient. https://securitronlinux.com/battlefield/stream-television-online-with-mpv-on-linux/. The best thing about the installation of Ubuntu 20.04 is the ability to install Nvidia drivers and restricted packages like mp3 support easily while finishing the installation. This is a non-fuss way to handle proprietary hardware on a Linux operating system. Otherwise, the installation of the drivers for Nvidia is a pain.
The speed of the operating system after a fresh installation is very good. This is very effective at providing a usable desktop environment. Wallpapers from previous Ubuntu releases may be installed by selecting the ubuntu-wallpapers-natty package for example. The sudo apt install ubuntu-wallpapers-*
command would install a nice selection of wallpapers to use on your Gnome desktop. if you plug in another hard drive that has Windows on it, run the sudo update-grub
command to update the GRUB boot menu and allow you to dual boot to Windows as well. I wish that it still had the lovely Human theme from early versions of the Ubuntu distribution, but you cannot have everything. I guess it is still available somewhere and could be installed if the user wishes to use that theme. Actually, NVM, I found it here: https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/human-theme so it is still available for Ubuntu 20.04. I guess if the user installed MATE then they could get a lovely legacy Ubuntu look.
Type sudo apt install human-theme
to install this legacy theme for MATE.
