Windows 8.1 at the moment is giving me a lot of problems. There is constant disk activity at 0.1 megabytes per second. This is very annoying, there are Windows services doing this, but it only recently started. T think it is better to use Linux instead, which does not have that problem. But why do Windows services need to be running all of the time and slowing down your system? Windows 10 has the same issue, with indexing and telemetry services running constantly, this is a source of wear on components. Something must be done about this, but Windows will only get worse and worse over time. There are about 5,330,000 results for windows 10 constant 100 disk usage in Google. This is a serious problem. Even if you stop a few services, it does not help as the remaining ones that you cannot stop are a source of trouble anyway. You can only stop the Windows Defender service by running another anti-virus package like Trend Micro Housecall. But then it will restart. And it does not even find all problems anyway. If you knew how it found malware, you could cloak it and possibly hide it amongst normal Windows services. Windows is famous for bugs and this will not change.
Windows has been thoroughly destroyed by Redmond WA. They peaked with the awesome Windows Vista, with the very nice wallpapers and themes. But it has gone downhill after that. Even with a fresh installation of Windows 10, it has 100% disk activity all of the time, this would not be a good thing for any computer, why this happens I have no idea. Why not enable users to schedule these things? Linux had a locatedb system that would enable users to search for files on their system. But this was barely noticeable when building the database, even on a Pentium II with a 350MHZ CPU and 192 MB of RAM. Microsoft cannot compete with that. Having a constantly running service that is thrashing the hard drive all of the time is very annoying and would not be good for the user. Having Windows Defender scans and Windows Update running upon startup is not good for the computer system. Linux does not have constant disk thrashing at all. This runs fine and is very secure and stable. The MATE desktop does not have the annoying live tiles and the massive start menu monstrosity that Windows 10 uses. That is very ugly.
